Cart Capital Founder Launches 'Build Before You Scale' Pledge to Promote Operational Excellence in eCommerce

Shelton Powell, founder of Cart Capital, has announced the launch of the "Build Before You Scale" Pledge, a personal initiative encouraging entrepreneurs to focus on operational excellence before chasing rapid growth. The pledge comes at a time when interest in eCommerce continues to climb, yet many new business owners struggle because they underestimate the work required to build a sustainable operation.

Rather than promoting shortcuts, Powell hopes the pledge will encourage more thoughtful conversations around entrepreneurship and long-term business building. "Most people fail in eCommerce not because the model doesn't work, but because they try to build alone," Powell said. "They underestimate how much structure, planning, and execution go into building something that lasts."

According to industry research, global retail eCommerce sales are expected to exceed $7 trillion by 2027. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that roughly 50% of new businesses do not survive beyond five years. Research consistently identifies weak operational planning, cash flow management, and poor execution among the leading reasons small businesses fail. Surveys of entrepreneurs regularly find that operational workload and time management are among the biggest challenges facing growing businesses.

Powell believes those numbers point to an issue that deserves more attention. "A lot of people are entering this space focused on excitement instead of infrastructure," he said. "The reality is that eCommerce is operationally heavy. If you don't build good systems early, the business eventually exposes those weaknesses."

The "Build Before You Scale" Pledge reflects the principles that have guided Powell's own career since entering eCommerce in 2017. "Everything gets measured. If it isn't tracked, it doesn't exist," he emphasized. "We own and operate the infrastructure behind eCommerce brands." Powell's philosophy centers on execution over promises and long-term brand building over quick wins.

Inspired by those lessons, Powell is making seven personal commitments and encouraging others to adopt them in their own businesses. These commitments include measuring progress weekly, improving one business system monthly, solving root problems, seeking honest feedback, continuous learning, choosing long-term discipline over short-term excitement, and helping other entrepreneurs develop realistic expectations. "Success comes from improving systems over time," Powell said. "The strongest businesses aren't usually built the fastest. They're built deliberately."

Powell also introduced a free Do-It-Yourself Toolkit, designed for anyone to begin strengthening their business habits without purchasing software or hiring consultants. The toolkit offers 10 practical actions, such as writing down three biggest business priorities each Monday, tracking one important performance metric daily, reviewing customer feedback weekly, and identifying recurring problems to document root causes. It also includes a 30-Day Progress Tracker to guide users through weeks of observation, organization, improvement, and repetition.

"The numbers tell you what happened," Powell said. "The feedback tells you if it mattered."

Powell is inviting entrepreneurs, students, professionals, and aspiring business owners to take the pledge and share the free toolkit with colleagues, friends, and local business communities. As founder of Cart Capital, an eCommerce operations company based in Miami, Florida, Powell has focused on building operational systems that help support online businesses over the long term. Cart Capital manages the infrastructure behind more than 150 eCommerce brands, including product research, supplier coordination, paid media, fulfilment, creative production, and customer retention. Powell's work centres on disciplined execution, measurable performance, and continuous operational improvement.
