Study Reveals Early Arterial Damage in Young Adults, Urging Prevention in Early Life

Study Reveals Early Arterial Damage in Young Adults, Urging Prevention in Early Life

A new scientific study published in Circulation: Population Health and Outcomes, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Heart Association, reveals that nearly 8 out of 10 young adult participants, with an average age of 23, have cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome (CKM syndrome) stages 1-3. The research, conducted using data from 1,283 participants in the Future of Families–Cardiovascular Health Among Young Adults (FF-CHAYA) study, found that those in more advanced stages of CKM syndrome exhibited early signs of arterial injury, including thicker carotid artery walls, which is an early marker of atherosclerosis.

The study highlights the urgent need for cardiovascular disease prevention efforts to begin earlier in life. CKM syndrome describes the interconnected relationship among obesity, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and cardiovascular disease. The syndrome is categorized by stages from 0 (no risk factors) to 4 (existing cardiovascular conditions). In this study, about 21% of participants had no identifiable risk factors (Stage 0), while the rest were in stages 1-3, with none in stage 4.

Participants were also assessed using the American Heart Association's Life's Essential 8 metrics, which encompass health behaviors and health factors such as healthy eating, physical activity, avoiding tobacco, healthy sleep, healthy weight, healthy cholesterol, healthy blood sugar, and healthy blood pressure. The study found that young adults with more advanced CKM syndrome stages had lower Life's Essential 8 scores, indicating poorer cardiovascular health.

According to Donald Lloyd-Jones, M.D., M.S., the study's lead author and a cardiologist at Boston Medical Center, the findings show that CKM syndrome staging and Life's Essential 8 are complementary for identifying adults younger than 30 who may be on a fast track for arterial injury and plaque build-up. He emphasizes that measuring and monitoring cardiovascular health in one's 20s is crucial for long-term health. The American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology guidelines recommend using the PREVENT™ equations for estimating cardiovascular risk, but these are only validated for ages 30-79. Therefore, for younger adults, the focus should be on optimizing Life's Essential 8 metrics.

The study's implications are significant for Texas and beyond, as they underscore the importance of early lifestyle interventions and cardiovascular risk assessment in young adults. With obesity rates in the U.S. climbing to about 40% of adults and 20% of youth in 2023, the findings suggest that many young adults are already on a path toward cardiovascular disease. By identifying these risks early, healthcare providers and public health initiatives can implement prevention strategies that may reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease later in life.

The researchers note that the study has limitations, including its cross-sectional design and the fact that the population included many individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, so the findings may not be generalizable to all young adults. Additional long-term studies are needed to determine how CKM syndrome stage in young adulthood relates to future cardiovascular disease risk. Nevertheless, the study provides compelling evidence for the necessity of early cardiovascular health monitoring and intervention.
