SoulfulDate Survey Reveals How Users Balance Efficiency and Personalization in First Messages

A recent survey conducted by SoulfulDate, an online social communication platform, provides insight into how users approach first messages in digital dating. The voluntary survey, which included approximately 2,300 active members, focused on the platform's Icebreakers feature—pre-written conversation starters that allow members to reach out to multiple profiles at once. The findings reveal a nearly even split between those who use the templates as-is and those who customize them, reflecting a broader tension in digital communication between efficiency and self-expression.

According to the survey, carried out from April to June 2026, 52% of respondents used the Icebreaker templates without any modification, while 41% modified them before sending. The remaining 7% said their approach varied depending on the profile they were contacting. Among those who kept the default templates, 36% said the template felt sufficient to start a conversation, 33% preferred saving time, 12% felt the template already said what they would have written, and 19% were uncertain about what to write. Interestingly, research published in Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking has found that individuals with higher social anxiety are significantly less likely to initiate contact in online environments, even when platforms offer ready-made tools. This suggests that for some users, the default templates may serve as a confidence booster.

The survey also examined sending behavior. 43% of users typically selected three recipients per session, the midpoint of the available range, while only 11% consistently sent to the maximum of five. Notably, users who sent to five recipients were 16 percentage points more likely to use the default template than the overall average (68% vs. 52%). This correlation indicates that those who aim for broader reach prioritize efficiency over personalization.

On the other side, among the 41% who customized their Icebreakers, 54% wanted the message to feel more personal, 23% wanted to reference something specific from the recipient's profile, 15% felt more comfortable sending something self-written, and 8% were dissatisfied with the default tone. Overall, 76% of respondents described the post-send experience as confident or neutral, positioning Icebreakers as a broadly low-friction entry point.

"The split we see in how SoulfulDate members use Icebreakers reflects something broader about how people approach a first message," said a SoulfulDate product team representative. "Some members value the speed and simplicity of a ready-made prompt. Others want to say something that feels specific to the person they are reaching out to. Understanding the difference between those two groups and what each of them needs shapes how we think about the feature going forward."

The survey collected no personally identifiable information, with responses stored independently of user accounts and an anonymity notice shown before taking part. Only aggregated results were retained. All respondents were registered, active SoulfulDate members who had used Icebreakers at least once, and no demographic data was collected beyond age eligibility (18+) and prior feature use. Participation was opt-in, so results reflect engaged users of the feature and may not represent the broader SoulfulDate membership.

SoulfulDate is an online social communication platform accessible across multiple regions, giving members a space for written correspondence and building new connections at their own pace. The platform offers both free and paid features: registration and profile browsing are available at no charge, while messaging, long-form correspondence, and media sharing are offered as premium options. New members can follow the SoulfulDate setup guide to get started.

These findings have implications beyond SoulfulDate, offering a window into how people navigate the trade-off between efficiency and authenticity in digital interactions. For businesses and platforms that rely on user engagement, understanding these preferences can inform feature design and user experience, potentially increasing user confidence and satisfaction.
