Huawei’s Mate XT 2 Debuts with LogicFolding Tau Chip, Paving Way for Tri-Fold Mainstream Adoption

In a move that underscores the rapid evolution of foldable technology, Huawei has officially launched the HUAWEI Mate XT 2 | ULTIMATE DESIGN, the first smartphone to incorporate the LogicFolding Tau (τ) Chip, marking the chip’s entry into mass commercialization. The announcement, made on September 7, highlights the company’s continued leadership in the tri-fold segment, a category it pioneered. The device will be available starting at RMB 19,999, with sales beginning September 12.

The Mate XT 2 introduces a wing-like tri-fold design that unfolds from both sides, offering a more intuitive experience. Aesthetically, it draws inspiration from Chinese heritage, featuring a cloud pattern on the back panel created using Brocade Cloud craftsmanship, available in Purple, White, and Black. The camera ring, crafted from Yttrium Crystal and fired at 1,800°C, undergoes eight polishing steps to form 33 star diamond facets, delivering a gemstone-like luster.

Under the hood, the device is powered by the Kirin 9050 Pro chip, which delivers a dual leap in performance and energy efficiency. According to Huawei, overall performance improves by 42% compared to the previous generation. The chip integrates the LinxiCore CPU and the Maleoon GPU, which features doubled computing units and cache, enabling hardware-level real-time ray tracing at 50 MRPS for immersive gaming. The NPU, based on the Da Vinci architecture, natively supports the Pangu 30B-A2B MoE large language model, allowing on-device AI capabilities such as AI album management with the Celia assistant.

The Mate XT 2 also showcases the Xuanwu Ultra-Durable Tri-Fold Architecture, which re-engineers hinge and screen technology for layered protection. Notably, it is the first tri-fold phone to support IP58/59 dust and water resistance. The cover screen uses Xuanwu Kunlun Glass, resistant to scratches and impacts, with anti-glare technology for outdoor visibility. The main screen incorporates a multi-layer composite structure, including UTG glass, aerospace-grade steel, and carbon fiber support, ensuring robust durability. The Advanced Precision Hinge System 2.0 employs a five-curved arm structure for even force distribution.

Security is a key focus. The device includes the industry’s first foldable Smart Shield Privacy Screen, which achieves hardware-level privacy protection. This feature uses an independent dual-pixel design to maintain resolution even when privacy mode is activated. It also intelligently senses environments like airports or train stations and can be activated via double-tap or a smart control button. Additionally, the phone’s Mobile Security Processor and independent security chip enable post-quantum cryptography algorithm detection and have passed EAL5+ CCRC certification, offering robust data protection.

Health monitoring is another highlight. The Mate XT 2 is equipped with ECG analysis software and has obtained an NMPA Class II Medical Device Registration Certificate. Users can measure ECG by holding the unfolded screen with both hands, with Celia providing interpretation and analysis.

Photography receives a comprehensive upgrade with the True-to-Color Camera 3.0, which filters infrared light to improve color reproduction by 95%. The triple camera setup includes an ultra-HDR main camera, an ultra-wide aperture periscope telephoto, and an ultra-wide angle camera. Video recording supports an 18 EV ultra-high dynamic range. The XMAGE SmartCapture system intelligently recognizes scenes and offers real-time AIGC previews for composition and lighting recommendations. The tri-fold form enables Desk-calendar mode for easy selfies and group shots.

The user experience is elevated by HarmonyOS 7, which redefines large-screen interactions. Live-Multitask supports three parallel windows with adjustable sizes and independent volume control. This experience is optimized for scenarios such as financial management, social entertainment, smart office, shopping comparison, and travel guides. The device is deeply adapted to leading industry apps, driving innovation in the tri-fold ecosystem.

The launch of the Mate XT 2 is significant for the smartphone industry, as it demonstrates the viability of tri-fold designs and brings advanced chip technology to the consumer market. The inclusion of the LogicFolding Tau chip and post-quantum cryptography highlights Huawei’s commitment to innovation and security. As the first of its kind to reach mass commercialization, the Mate XT 2 is poised to influence the direction of foldable devices, potentially making them more mainstream. For those interested in the latest technology, the device offers a glimpse into the future of mobile computing, where form factor flexibility, security, and AI converge.
