Aquafil's Margin Resilience and Deleveraging Progress Highlighted in Stonegate Capital Partners Update

Stonegate Capital Partners has updated its coverage on Aquafil S.p.A (BIT: ECNL), highlighting the company's second-quarter 2026 results that demonstrate resilience in margins and continued progress in reducing debt, even as the company faces rising raw material and transportation costs. The report underscores Aquafil's strategic position as it navigates a challenging cost environment while preparing for future volume growth.

In the second quarter of 2026, Aquafil reported revenue of €135.7 million, a slight 1.0% decline year-over-year, with volumes remaining broadly stable. EBITDA decreased by 2.5% to €20.7 million, but the EBITDA margin held strong at 15.3%, compared to 15.5% in the same period last year. This modest decline is attributed to a timing mismatch between higher input costs and contractual price recovery, rather than a fundamental deterioration in cost performance. Management indicated that the majority of the cost increase from Q2 is being recovered through pricing in Q3, with additional recovery expected in the fourth quarter.

The report emphasizes that Aquafil's lower fixed cost base and operational efficiencies are supporting margins even before a broader demand recovery materializes. This resilience is a key factor in the investment thesis, as the company continues to navigate cyclical headwinds. Furthermore, the balance sheet improvement is a notable achievement. Net financial position (NFP) improved to €196.9 million in the first half of 2026, down from €209.5 million at the end of 2025. The NFP to LTM EBITDA ratio improved to 2.64x, down from 2.89x, reflecting management's commitment to deleveraging.

Management continues to prioritize reducing debt, and further progress could eventually open the door for increased capital expenditures or external growth opportunities. This financial discipline provides additional flexibility as the company heads into 2027, according to the Stonegate update.

Looking ahead, the main remaining execution requirement for 2026 is volume growth rather than margin recovery. First-grade volumes increased only 0.3% in the first half of the year, which is well below management's full-year objective of approximately 5% growth. This implies a significant acceleration in the second half of the year is necessary to meet targets. Management remains confident in its annual goals, though it identifies Europe as the principal area of demand uncertainty.

The Stonegate Capital Partners update provides investors with a comprehensive view of Aquafil's current standing and future prospects. The company's ability to maintain margins amid cost pressures and its focus on reducing leverage are positive indicators, but volume recovery remains the key metric to watch. As the company moves through the second half of 2026, its performance in Europe and its ability to accelerate volume growth will be critical to achieving its stated objectives.
