Show Notes
Most chambers of commerce drifted into parties, golf tournaments, and events. The Intercontinental Chamber of Commerce in Houston deliberately went the other way.
Reggie Gray, President & CEO (in the role for about 21 years), explains how the chamber—originally the North Houston Greenspoint Chamber—reoriented around pure business development, tangible projects, and real results for members. It is now 40 years old, almost entirely member-funded, and has partners and vice chairs on every continent.
In this conversation:
- Why chambers started prioritizing their own revenue over member results—and how Intercontinental reversed that
- How they help members land real projects (ports, infrastructure, energy) instead of just exchanging business cards
- Tailoring support for very different members
- Why a pure membership model avoids the “silo” problem of tax-base or municipal funding
- International work: members on every continent, and upcoming focus on Venezuela plus European events with Go-On Group
- Reggie’s background as an author and speaker
