Dr. Patel highlighted that the contaminated smoke travels far beyond the immediate fire zones, reaching areas experiencing record summer heat. This widespread impact means that even those far from the fires need to take precautions. The American Heart Association offers several tips to reduce exposure: stay indoors with doors and windows closed, use high-efficiency air filters in air conditioning systems or portable air cleaners—which can reduce indoor particulate matter by 50-60% according to the Association's 2020 scientific statement—limit outdoor activity between noon and 3 p.m., wear a mask outdoors, stay hydrated with water while avoiding alcohol and caffeine, and wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
