San Antonio residents tired of paying monthly fees for off-site storage are finding a new solution in their own backyards. Tuff Shed, an employee-owned American manufacturer, is showcasing its customizable sheds and structures at the San Antonio Home and Garden Show, where sales design consultant Richard Castellanos explained how homeowners can reclaim their garages and cancel storage rentals by investing in a permanent on-site structure.
Castellanos joined Building Texas Show host Justin McKenzie for a floor-side conversation recorded live at the event, outlining the practical benefits of Tuff Shed's offerings. He emphasized that the company's employee-ownership model drives a customer-focused experience. "It's not just me as a sales design consultant trying to sell you a product. It's actually me trying to get you an experience that one, you're going to recommend to your friends and two, is going to keepsake your valuables, your memorables that you're storing in your shed," he told McKenzie.
The demand is clear: a majority of Tuff Shed's residential customers are looking to escape recurring storage unit costs. "They want to get out of their storage unit that they're paying for, get something on their property that they can access 24/7," Castellanos said. This shift is driving interest in backyard studios, workspaces, and garage overflow, as well as commercial applications for school districts and government entities.
For San Antonio homeowners, navigating local regulations is key. Castellanos highlighted the city's 300-square-foot threshold that often allows construction without a permit, but noted that municipalities like Castle Hills and Alamo Heights have different rules. He also detailed the construction quality: stick-built framing using 2x4s at 16 inches on center, with upgrades to 2x6 or 2x8 lumber for larger designs like two-story barns.
Tuff Shed's history dates back 45 years to founder and CEO Tom Saurey, who grew the company to 74 factories across the United States. In the San Antonio area, customers can visit display yards at two South Side locations outside Loop 410, including the main site at 410 and Bandera where Castellanos is based, and a newer location off I-35 in New Braunfels. Turnaround from design to build slot is currently one to two weeks, with on-site assembly typically completed in a single day.
For those who prefer to plan ahead, Tuff Shed offers a self-design tool at tuffshed.com, allowing customers to create their ideal structure before consulting with a specialist. Whether it's a backyard office, a chicken coop from the Woodmaster's portable division, or a spacious workshop, the message is clear: why pay for storage when you can own a structure that adds value and convenience to your property?
The Building Texas Show, hosted by Justin McKenzie, profiles the people and companies shaping Texas construction. The episode featuring Tuff Shed is the first in a San Antonio Home and Garden Series and is available now on major podcast platforms.
