Star Burger, a fast-casual restaurant founded by the Estrella family, has entered a partnership with the University of Miami Athletics to become the Official Burger of the Miami Hurricanes for the 2026-2027 season. The announcement, made on September 29, 2026, comes less than two months after the restaurant opened its flagship location at 4901 SW Eighth St. in Miami. The partnership represents the restaurant's first tie to the university and underscores a growing trend of local businesses aligning with collegiate sports to boost visibility and customer loyalty.
At the center of the collaboration is the Canes Burger, a double-stacked burger made with 100% U.S. grass-fed and grass-finished beef patties, smashed to order, and topped with aged Cheddar cheese, a crunchy tostón round, and Star Burger's signature Cat 5 Sauce. Served on toasted Martin's potato buns, the burger is designed to represent the University of Miami's colors: the Cat 5 pesto provides deep green, while the tostón round adds bright golden orange. The burger was created with input from Hurricanes star Malachi Toney and is a permanent menu item, not a limited-time offering. "We built this one to stay," said Joey Estrella, president of Star Burger. "Partnering with University of Miami Athletics is an honor for our family, and we wanted to give it something more than a name on a menu board. This burger will be here long after the season ends."
The partnership highlights the strategic importance of community integration for emerging brands. By associating with a major collegiate athletics program, Star Burger gains immediate recognition among Hurricanes fans and positions itself as a local gathering spot. The restaurant will broadcast Miami Hurricanes football games live all season, encouraging fans to visit, try the burger, and cheer on the team. This approach not only drives foot traffic but also fosters a sense of belonging among customers, a key factor in building a loyal clientele. For Texas businesses, this serves as a reminder that aligning with local sports teams can create powerful connections and differentiate a brand in a competitive market.
Gianluca Piccolo, general manager of Star Burger, explained the thought process behind the burger's ingredients: "We wanted Miami Athletics and the Estrella family to come through in the flavors, with the American cheddar for UM and Cuban plantains for the family. The idea for pesto sauce came from my own Italian roots, and it ties all the flavors together." This attention to detail and storytelling through food resonates with consumers who value authenticity and local heritage. Since the burger's launch, customers have been ordering it by name. "We have people come in every day, asking for the Canes Burger," Piccolo said. "The sauce is different from anything else on the menu, and they want to try it."
The Miami location spans 2,750 square feet and features interior seating, plus a 750-square-foot covered and ventilated terrace overlooking the Granada stone-arched entrance to Coral Gables. It offers ample parking and is open daily from 11:30 am to 11:30 pm. For more information, visit Star Burger.
The implications of this partnership extend beyond Miami. It demonstrates how a family-owned business can leverage sports marketing to accelerate growth and embed itself in the community. For Texas entrepreneurs, the lesson is clear: strategic partnerships with local institutions can amplify brand reach and create lasting customer relationships. As Star Burger continues to expand, its model of combining quality food with community engagement may inspire similar ventures in the Lone Star State.
