SMT Scharf Adjusts FY 2026 Forecast Amid Market Headwinds, Pursues Strategic Initiatives

SMT Scharf AG, a global supplier of transport and logistics systems for underground mining, has revised its financial outlook for the 2026 fiscal year following a challenging first nine months. According to preliminary figures, the company reported consolidated revenue of EUR 51.5 million for the period, down from EUR 70.9 million in the prior-year period, and operating earnings (EBIT) of EUR 0.0 million, compared to EUR 2.4 million in 9M 2025. The decline was driven by reduced investment activity in key markets for coal mining and tunnel logistics, which significantly impacted new systems business. Additionally, the third quarter was burdened by the unexpected termination of a tunnel project in the Middle East, resulting in non-recurring charges of EUR 0.6 million from provisions.

Against this backdrop, and with expectations that customer investment willingness will remain subdued in the fourth quarter, the Managing Board has adjusted its full-year forecast. Consolidated revenue is now expected to range between EUR 75 million and EUR 85 million, down from the previous guidance of EUR 95 million to EUR 115 million. EBIT is projected to be between EUR -0.5 million and EUR -1.5 million, compared to the earlier forecast of EUR 1 million to EUR 2 million. The announcement was made via NEWMEDIAWIRE.

Despite the near-term challenges, CEO Longjiao Wang emphasized the company's commitment to its strategy: “We remain focused on consistently implementing our adopted strategy and expanding our business with an extended product portfolio.” He highlighted targeted sales partnerships, such as with the CFH Group in Kazakhstan and South Africa, and the ongoing development of the electromobility product portfolio. Notably, the company's 19-seat personnel carrier and 8-tonne cargo vehicle have received MA certification in China, confirming their suitability for safe use in potentially explosive underground environments.

The revised forecast underscores the cyclical nature of the mining equipment market, where lower investment activity can swiftly impact suppliers. However, SMT Scharf's strategic initiatives—including diversification into electromobility and geographic expansion—position it to capitalize on medium- and long-term opportunities. The company's focus on battery-powered transport solutions aligns with broader industry trends toward sustainable mining practices. As the sector evolves, SMT Scharf's ability to innovate and adapt will be crucial for maintaining its competitive edge.
