Munich-based FinTech firm Rubean AG has been selected by Swiss company HS-Soft AG as its SoftPOS partner, a move that will replace traditional card readers with software-based payment acceptance integrated directly into bakery till systems. The announcement, made via NEWMEDIAWIRE, highlights a significant shift in how small and medium-sized retailers—particularly in the bakery sector—handle transactions, with implications for cost, efficiency, and customer experience.
HS-Soft AG, which has served the bakery, patisserie, and confectionery market in the DACH region for 39 years, currently supports over 700 businesses with more than 4,000 till stations. By integrating Rubean SoftPOS, the company aims to eliminate the need for separate card terminals, each of which typically requires its own cable, contract, and maintenance. Instead, the payment function becomes an app on the till itself.
“At many bakery counters today, there are two devices side by side: the till and the card terminal, each with its own cable, its own contract and its own maintenance,” said Heiner Schriever, founder and CEO of HS-Soft. “With Rubean, the terminal becomes an app on the till. This means: one less device, lower costs, and every new till can accept cards straight away, without the need to have a separate terminal delivered and set up first.” Schriever added that customers simply hold their card or mobile phone up to the till screen, which also displays their shopping, making transactions quick even during morning rushes.
The partnership supports local card systems such as girocard alongside Mastercard and Visa, ensuring broad acceptance. For Rubean, the deal represents another large-scale deployment of its SoftPOS platform, which has been developed over years of research and development to meet regulatory and security standards. “Together with HS-Soft, we’re creating a new checkout experience for bakeries and their customers,” said Stephan Kück, co-CEO of Rubean.
The implications extend beyond convenience. For bakery owners, reducing hardware and maintenance costs can directly improve margins in a low-margin industry. The ability to accept card payments immediately on any new till without waiting for terminal delivery and setup also accelerates onboarding and reduces downtime. For customers, the streamlined checkout process—where the payment device is the same screen displaying the order—could shorten queues and reduce friction.
Rubean AG, headquartered in Munich, has positioned its platform for high availability, scalability, and security, serving banks, acquirers, and merchants. The company’s technology is already in daily use in large-scale deployments, and this partnership with HS-Soft signals further scaling in the DACH region’s bakery sector. While the announcement originates in Europe, it underscores a broader trend in retail technology: the convergence of payment acceptance and point-of-sale systems. As Texas businesses—from bakeries to food trucks and small retailers—seek to reduce hardware complexity and improve customer flow, solutions like SoftPOS could offer a template for similar integrations. The partnership between HS-Soft and Rubean demonstrates how established till system providers can leverage fintech to deliver tangible operational benefits, a development worth watching for Texas merchants and the technology providers that serve them.
