Kennedale residents and their four-legged companions now have a dedicated space to run, play, and socialize, thanks to the opening of Sturgeon Bark Park, the city's first dog park. Located at 6729 Oakcrest Drive East, the park was made possible through a generous donation from Ron Sturgeon, who commissioned the park and its design to provide a much-needed resource for the community. Garret Davis of Davis Commercial Services coordinated the project, bringing the park from concept to completion.
Sturgeon Bark Park features separate areas for large and small dogs, fire hydrants and toys for play, a water fountain, picnic tables, and a canopy that provides shade and a comfortable gathering place for dog owners. The park officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Sturgeon, local representatives, community members, and plenty of excited dogs. Darrell Hull, Kennedale city manager, said at the grand opening, "I am so proud to accept and open our first dog park, and give heartfelt thanks to Mr. Sturgeon, as he gave us this for our citizens to enjoy with their pets, and for his help as we redevelop parts of the city."
As Kennedale's first dedicated dog park, Sturgeon Bark Park marks an important milestone for the community. Residents now have a dog-friendly destination close to home, eliminating the need to travel outside the city for such amenities. This addition not only enhances the quality of life for pet owners but also creates a place where neighbors can meet, socialize, and spend time outdoors together, fostering a stronger sense of community.
The economic implications of this donation are significant. Dog parks are known to increase property values in surrounding neighborhoods, attract new residents, and support local businesses as more people spend time outdoors and visit nearby shops and services. For Kennedale, which is in the midst of redevelopment efforts, Sturgeon Bark Park serves as a catalyst for growth and revitalization, making the city more attractive to families and individuals seeking a vibrant, pet-friendly environment.
Community members are invited to grab a leash, bring their four-legged friends, and visit Sturgeon Bark Park at 6729 Oakcrest Drive East, Kennedale, TX 76140. A video of the grand opening is available for viewing at Sturgeon Bark Park Grand Opening.
This project highlights how private donations can fill critical gaps in public infrastructure, delivering immediate benefits to residents while supporting long-term economic development. For Kennedale, Sturgeon Bark Park is more than just a place for dogs to play—it's a investment in the community's future.
