Mitch Gould's Retail Journey: From Brooklyn Roots to Amazon's Sports Nutrition Aisle

Mitch Gould's career in retail distribution has placed him at the center of some of the most significant shifts in the American consumer products industry, from the rise of big-box home improvement chains to the e-commerce revolution powered by Amazon. His journey, which began in a Brooklyn family steeped in manufacturing and distribution, offers a case study in how foundational retail skills translate across generations and platforms—a lesson with direct relevance for Texas businesses aiming to scale consumer brands nationally.

Gould, a third-generation retail distribution veteran, learned the fundamentals of manufacturing, sales, and distribution from his father and grandfather. "My grandfather had a factory in Brooklyn and a showroom in the Empire State Building," Gould said. "My father Jerry carried that tradition forward in manufacturing and distribution. I grew up learning how products were made, how they were sold, and how relationships opened doors." Those early lessons propelled Gould into a career working with major national retailers including Home Depot, Lowe's, Walmart, Costco, CVS, Walgreens, GNC, and Amazon.

His experience spans multiple product categories, from hardware and household goods to health, wellness, and sports nutrition. Along the way, he has helped manufacturers and consumer brands pursue distribution opportunities, working with established names such as Rubbermaid, Sunbeam, Igloo, and Miracle-Gro. Gould's perspective on retail's evolution is particularly timely as Texas continues to attract consumer product companies and entrepreneurs seeking national reach. "Every retailer is different," Gould said. "You have to understand what their buyers are looking for, what their customers want, and how to make the product work for that particular store. That's something you learn through experience, not from a textbook."

A notable chapter in Gould's career involved Amazon's developing sports nutrition business. Working with Muscle Foods and Amazon buyers, he helped introduce more than 100 sports nutrition brands and products to the online marketplace, contributing to the early development of a category that would become an established part of Amazon's health and wellness offerings. "Amazon came along and changed the retail landscape," Gould said. "I had the opportunity to help build its sports nutrition category, bringing more than 100 brands and products to the platform. It was a different way of doing business, but the relationships, product knowledge, and distribution experience I'd developed over the years were just as valuable."

For Texas businesses, Gould's trajectory underscores the enduring value of relationship-building and product knowledge even as retail channels multiply and evolve. His career reflects the transformation of American retail, from the dominance of national brick-and-mortar chains to the emergence of e-commerce platforms that allow brands to reach consumers across the country. As more Texas companies look to expand into national retail and online marketplaces, Gould's experience demonstrates that a foundation in traditional manufacturing and distribution can translate into opportunities across generations of American retail.
