Huawei has launched its next-generation flagship HUAWEI Mate 90 Series, introducing the LogicFolding Tau Chip, the Kirin 9050 Pro, and a suite of innovations that set a new benchmark for mobile technology. The announcement, made via Media OutReach Newswire, underscores Huawei's commitment to vertical integration of hardware, software, chips, and cloud, as stated by Richard Yu, Executive Director of Huawei and Chairman of the Huawei Consumer BG. The Mate 90 Series represents a comprehensive evolution in design, performance, imaging, reliability, and smart user experience.
Between 2007 and the end of 2025, Huawei invested a total of CNY1.8 trillion (approximately USD 250 billion) into research and development. This long-term investment has yielded foundational advancements in Kirin chips, HarmonyOS, and other core technologies, now manifesting in tangible product experiences. The Mate 90 Series is a direct result of this strategy, positioning Huawei as a leader in mobile innovation and potentially reshaping the competitive landscape of the global smartphone market.
The series comprises four models: the Mate 90, Mate 90 Pro, Mate 90 Pro Max, and Mate 90 RS ULTIMATE DESIGN. The Pro Max features the LogicFolding Tau Chip, which achieves 5 million signal transmission bonds and 125 TB/s inter-die bandwidth, drastically reducing critical path latency. The Pro Max Premium Edition and RS ULTIMATE DESIGN are powered by the Kirin 9050 Pro chip, delivering a 31% increase in overall performance. The Pro model's Kirin 9035 chip brings a 20% performance boost, and the standard edition's Kirin 9030 chip offers a 27% gain. Vertically integrated with HarmonyOS 7, the Kirin 9050 Pro CPU supports hyper-threading for ultra-smooth operations, and hardware-accelerated ray tracing renders up to 55 million rays per second for advanced mobile gaming.
Durability and display technology are also enhanced. The Mate 90 Pro and higher models are built on the full-body Kunlun Xuanwu architecture, with the industry's first Optical Kunlun Glass on the camera cover providing 20x better drop resistance. The front display uses 3rd-gen Kunlun Glass with 50% improved impact resistance. The Pro Max Premium Edition and RS ULTIMATE DESIGN feature upgraded Xuanwu Kunlun Glass, cutting reflections by 70% and boosting scratch resistance by 16x. The entire lineup supports IP68 and IP69 ratings. The second-generation Linglong Display on the Pro reaches 12,000 nits peak brightness at 1% APL, with panel lifespan extended by 138%. The Pro Max and RS ULTIMATE DESIGN debut a Full-color Linglong Display with full BT.2020 color management, enabling over 60 mainstream apps to upsample P3 content to vibrant BT.2020 quality.
Connectivity and imaging receive significant upgrades. An industry-first Wi-Fi and cellular converged antenna architecture boosts signal gain by 2 dB, and the entire lineup supports eSIM, with the Pro Max pioneering four-SIM, three-standby functionality. The XMAGE True-to-Color Portrait system includes True-to-Color Camera 3.0 with full-focal-length infrared optical coating, advancing color accuracy by 37% and skin-tone accuracy by 62%. The Pro Max features an 18 EV ultra-HDR main camera, a 200 MP RYYB telephoto camera, and CIPA 7.5-rated stabilization. The HUAWEI XMAGE Z10 Modular Camera offers a 1-inch sensor and 24–240 mm continuous optical zoom.
HarmonyOS AI brings smarter features, including a 30B MoE full-modal on-device foundation model on the Pro Max and higher models. Celia Memories syncs content from over 50 apps, and the Celia navigation bar suggests over 30 context-aware actions. HarmonyOS 6 and 7 now power over 90 million devices, with a goal to surpass 100 million by year-end, and Huawei's global registered developer community exceeds 11 million.
The Mate 90 Series starts at CNY5,999 for the Mate 90, CNY6,999 for the Mate 90 Pro, CNY9,499 for the Mate 90 Pro Max, and CNY12,999 for the Mate 90 RS ULTIMATE DESIGN. This launch matters because it demonstrates Huawei's resilience and technological independence, potentially influencing global supply chains and spurring competition in AI and chip design. For Texas businesses in technology and manufacturing, Huawei's advancements could signal shifts in the semiconductor and software ecosystems, emphasizing the importance of R&D investment and vertical integration in driving economic impact.
