The Hispanic Public Relations Association (HPRA) has named Jesus "Malverde" Gonzalez, Vice President, Creative, Latin at BMI, as its 2026 ¡BRAVO! Pioneer of the Year. The award recognizes a career spent helping Latino artists and songwriters find opportunity, build careers, and be seen within an evolving music industry. Gonzalez will be honored at the 2026 HPRA ¡BRAVO! Awards on November 19 at the Los Angeles River Center and Gardens, as HPRA returns to the city where it was founded 42 years ago. The recognition is part of this year's theme, "Legacy in Motion," celebrating those who built the spaces we inherited and those continuing to transform them for future generations.
Gonzalez's path to executive leadership began far from the boardroom. A son of Coachella, California—one of the nation's largest immigrant farmworker communities—and a lifelong Angeleno, he first entered the music industry as a recording artist from 2003 to 2009. As a songwriter, he performed his first BMI SXSW showcase in 2005, years before returning to the organization as an executive. "The most extraordinary leaders are those who never forget who they were or where they came from before the title, the access or the influence," said HPRA President Sonia V. Diaz. "Jesus knows what it feels like to be the artist looking for someone to recognize your potential because he lived it. What makes his journey meaningful is that success didn't separate him from that experience. Instead, it shaped the way he shows up."
After his years as a recording artist, Gonzalez built a career at the intersection of music, culture, and business. He spent nearly seven years at Universal Music Group, most recently as Senior Vice President of Brands & Partnerships, where he developed collaborations between Latin artists and global companies, securing partnerships for artists including J Balvin, Juanes, and Luis Fonsi. His career also includes serving as Vice President of Music Partnerships across Rogers & Cowan, FRUKT, and Octagon under Interpublic, as well as Principal Partner at music and brand consulting agency Maleco Music. Gonzalez joined BMI in 2021 and today oversees its Latin Creative team, helping sign and develop talent, supporting BMI's community of songwriters and publishers, and serving as a bridge between the Latin music community and the industry at large. High-profile signings and retentions during his tenure include Peso Pluma, Edgar Barrera, Bizarrap, Ryan Castro, and Alvaro Diaz. He has also been named to Billboard's Latin Power Players list for five consecutive years, from 2021 through 2025.
For Texas businesses and the broader music industry, Gonzalez's recognition underscores the economic power of Latino creators and the importance of diverse leadership in opening markets. His work curating showcases, moderating industry conversations, hosting BMI's annual Latin Awards, and developing initiatives to support BMI's Latin roster demonstrates how strategic investment in Latino talent drives growth and innovation. The HPRA ¡BRAVO! Awards, held since 2014, recognize excellence in multicultural communications, and HPRA itself, founded in 1984, remains the premier organization for Hispanic public relations professionals in the U.S., offering professional development, national scholarships, chapter programming, and industry recognition. As HPRA returns to Los Angeles for this year's ceremony, Gonzalez's story—from artist to executive—serves as a reminder that creating opportunities for others is both a business imperative and a legacy in motion.
