Engle Services Releases Five-Tip Guide for Birmingham Homeowners to Prepare for Cooling Season

As Alabama's summer heat approaches, Engle Services Heating and Air has published a five-tip guide to help Birmingham homeowners prepare for cooling season. The guide, released in late April, covers a/c installation, heat pump installation, and a/c repair, aiming to reduce emergency calls and high costs during peak demand.

Alabama's climate, with temperatures regularly exceeding 90 degrees Fahrenheit from June to September, places significant stress on residential HVAC systems. Improperly maintained or undersized systems are at higher risk of failure during the hottest months. The guide identifies five key areas: scheduling a/c installation before peak season, considering heat pump installation for year-round efficiency, not delaying a/c repair when symptoms appear, replacing air filters consistently, and having ductwork inspected alongside unit service.

Heat pump installation is gaining particular interest in the region. Modern heat pumps manage both cooling and heating in a single unit, offering energy savings in Alabama's mild winters. Unlike conventional systems that generate heat, heat pumps transfer heat, making them more efficient in moderate climates. Engle Services has noted a rise in homeowner inquiries about heat pumps, driven by unpredictable energy costs and a desire to lower utility bills. Technicians evaluate whether a home's infrastructure is compatible with heat pump installation or if upgrades like electrical panel work are needed.

“We see the same pattern every year – homeowners wait until the first hot week to call about a/c installation or a broken system, and by then wait times are longer and options are more limited,” said Michael Engle, owner of Engle Services Heating and Air. “Our goal with releasing these 5 tips in April is to give Birmingham-area families enough lead time to get ahead of the heat, not react to it.”

The guide emphasizes timing. Having a new air conditioning system installed in spring rather than mid-summer allows technicians greater scheduling availability and helps homeowners avoid emergency pricing. Proper calibration before heavy use also improves performance. Similarly, addressing a/c repair needs promptly—such as unusual noises, reduced airflow, or high utility bills—can prevent minor issues from escalating into costly failures during high-demand periods.

Ductwork efficiency is another critical factor. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, leaking or poorly sealed ducts can reduce system efficiency by up to 30 percent. An inspection can determine whether energy loss originates from the unit or the duct system. Engle Services recommends having ductwork checked alongside unit service to maximize efficiency.
