Arizona Dental Practice Demonstrates Single-Visit Crown Model with In-Office Milling

Rutledge Dental, a general and restorative practice in Oro Valley, Arizona, is completing ceramic crown restorations in a single appointment using chairside CAD/CAM technology, the practice announced. Led by Dr. Joel Rutledge Jr., the practice designs and mills crowns in its office, removing the follow-up visit that conventional crown procedures typically require.

The traditional crown process has long involved at least two separate appointments: one to prepare the tooth and take impressions, and another to seat the permanent crown. Between those visits, patients wear a temporary restoration. With CEREC CAD/CAM technology, Rutledge Dental completes digital scanning, crown design, and in-office milling during one visit. The system captures a digital impression of the prepared tooth, generates a three-dimensional crown design, and a milling unit fabricates the ceramic restoration for same-day seating.

The workflow removes the need for physical impression material, which some patients find uncomfortable, and produces a 3D scan that can be reviewed and adjusted on-screen before milling begins. Crowns are milled from a single block of ceramic material that matches the color and translucency of natural tooth enamel, so the process does not depend on an external dental laboratory or a waiting period for off-site fabrication.

For patients, the practical effect is fewer appointments and no temporary restoration. Individuals managing demanding schedules or those who prefer to reduce the number of dental visits associated with a restoration can arrive, receive the preparation and final crown placement, and leave without a return visit for seating. The practice serves patients from Oro Valley, Tucson, and surrounding communities, and the availability of same-day crowns through a provider in nearby Oro Valley has made the technology accessible to Tucson-area residents without requiring travel to a downtown or specialty location.

CEREC, developed by Dentsply Sirona, is among the more widely adopted chairside systems in dentistry, and CAD/CAM has been used in the field for several decades. The model shows how dental practices can compress a multi-visit procedure into a single appointment by bringing design and manufacturing in-house. For the dental industry, it illustrates a shift toward chairside production that reduces coordination with outside labs and may improve patient satisfaction by limiting time away from work and other obligations. For patients, the announcement signals that same-day crown restorations are available in the Oro Valley and Tucson market. More information about the practice and its single-visit crown workflow is available through the practice's website, and images of the practice and its technology are available online.
