Albentosa Completes 'Way of the Holy Grail' Project to Boost Rural Tourism with EU Funds

The City Council of Albentosa presented the results of the 'Way of the Holy Grail' project on June 26, an initiative that has adapted and improved the cultural itinerary as it passes through the municipality, reinforcing its tourist attraction and commitment to sustainable rural development. The project was funded by European Next Generation EU funds within the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), totaling two million euros.

The institutional act was attended by Mayor Yolanda Salvador Corella, along with José Luis Alvira, president of the Gúdar-Javalambre region; Ana Cris Lahoz, provincial deputy of Teruel; and Beatriz Martín, first vice-president of the Provincial Council of Teruel. They reviewed the actions carried out and the impact this project will have for the future of the municipality.

The project was conceived and developed by Dr. Ana Mafé García, president of the Cultural Association El Camino del Santo Grial and an expert in tourism and cultural itineraries. She designed a strategic proposal to turn cultural heritage into an engine of territorial development, entrepreneurship, and opportunities for interior municipalities. The execution was made possible by the commitment of the Albentosa City Council and Mayor Salvador Corella, who integrated 'The Way of the Holy Grail' into the municipality's tourism development strategy.

Among the actions carried out are the improvement of trails, creation of tourist routes, rehabilitation of the pilgrims' refuge, signposting of the itinerary, adaptation of accesses, urban beautification, and various promotion and training actions. The tourism promotion of 'The Way of the Holy Grail in Aragon' is also developed within the Strategic Plan of Subsidies of the Department of Environment and Tourism of the Government of Aragon, reinforcing the dissemination of this cultural itinerary as an opportunity to revitalize the territory, strengthen the business fabric, and generate new opportunities for sustainable development.

The 'Way of the Holy Grail' follows the historical route of the Holy Chalice from the third to the fourteenth century. After its arrival in Hispania, tradition places the Holy Grail in Huesca, birthplace of Saint Lawrence, before being transferred to various locations in the Aragonese Pyrenees during the Muslim occupation. It was eventually kept at the Monastery of San Juan de la Peña, a major spiritual and political center of the Kingdom of Aragon. The itinerary runs through municipalities of extraordinary historical and scenic value, including Jaca, Bailo, Santa Cruz de la Serós, Loarre, Huesca, Zaragoza, Daroca, and Teruel—a UNESCO World Heritage site for its Mudejar art.

With this action, Albentosa consolidates itself as a reference municipality in enhancing 'The Way of the Holy Grail,' demonstrating how cooperation between public administrations, cultural entities, and scientific knowledge can translate into real projects capable of promoting economic, tourist, and social development in the Aragonese rural environment.
