Did You Know? | The Dan and Holekamp House – Comfort, Texas

In the late 19th century, Dan Holekamp (1851–1931) and his wife FrancisKa “Frances” Weidenfeld Holekamp (1862–1947)—both descendants of Comfort’s founding families—helped shape the social and cultural identity of their Hill Country community.

Beginning in the 1880s, the Holekamps operated several cornerstone businesses, including a mercantile, a saloon and pool hall, and an amusement hall known as Holekamp’s Hall. This lively venue became a gathering place for concerts, performances, and community events—many held in the German language, reflecting Comfort’s enduring heritage.

Dan’s leadership extended beyond business. His involvement in the Sons of Hermann Lodge helped preserve the town’s deep-rooted German traditions and fostered a strong sense of community.

In 1907, the couple built their home on 7th Street, intentionally choosing a location equidistant between their business ventures—a fitting symbol of their balanced lives at the center of Comfort’s growth.

Today, the Holekamp name remains synonymous with heritage, hospitality, and the spirit of community. Their legacy, honored by Texas Historical Marker #23494, stands as a reminder of the individuals who built not just businesses—but a culture that still defines Comfort, Texas.
